In 1998 a group of Washington state apple growers formed an organization to market the Cameo apple variety.

The organization, called the Cameo Apple Marketing Association (CAMA), represents 80 percent of the state's cameo production, which translates to some 825,000 boxes this season.

The group, headed by grower Doug Stockwell of Wenatchee, Wash., created to create a trade brand called American Cameo™.

American Cameo apples are sold by select shippers in Washington state who agree to adopt a set of best practices for both growing and shipping.

"We know quality is the number one purchasing factor for shoppers," Stockwell said. "We've developed a customized quality control program - just for growing and shipping the American Cameo - that will ensure the highest quality fruit is delivered to market from a pressure perspective."

CAMA has created promotional programs with key retailers across the country.

American Cameo apples also carry a unique branded sticker, for easy identification by shoppers.

The cameo apple variety was discovered as a chance seedling in a Washington state orchard in the 1980s and has been grown commercially for the past six years.

Cameo apples have a sweet, tart flavor and are known as one of the best eating-apple varieties.
